Resting on the southern banks of the Zambezi River at the western end of the eponymous falls, this popular tourist town is compact enough to walk around and makes an ideal base for travellers exploring the seventh wonder of the world, the unfathomably vast Victoria Falls. About two-thirds of the falls can be viewed from the Zimbabwean side and, while the falls are undoubtedly the star attraction, the area provides both adventure seekers and sightseers with plenty of opportunities to warrant a longer stay. Popular activities include scenic flights over the falls in helicopters or micro lights, bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge, white-water rafting (seasonal), and day trips to Chobe National Park. The town itself offers some excellent accommodation and restaurant options as well as an eclectic variety of African curios and authentic art sold by friendly Zimbabwean locals who are wonderfully welcoming and eager to help you enjoy your stay.
The immense beauty of the Zambezi has captured the hearts of explorers for over a century. A’Zambezi is famed for its African-style design, curvy lay-out, distinctive thatched roof and its perfect blending into the surrounding environment. Likewise, its accommodation follows the same theme, with thoughtfully decorated river-theme rooms in a variety of options.

Situated in western Zimbabwe, the Hwange National Park is the country's biggest reserve, home to a profusion of wildlife, including giraffe, lion, zebra and approximately 40 000 elephants. It provides a sanctuary for all the country’s endangered species, including a population of wild dogs thought to be among the most sizeable surviving groups on the continent. The park’s magnificent terrain ranges from desert dunes, savannah lands and mopane woodlands to rocky outcrops and sparse forests. Visitors can look forward to game drives, guided walks or horse riding safaris. Other highlights include: the Bumbusi National Monument and the Nyamandhlovu Pan.
A small intimate lodge featuring 7 luxurious tree houses and 2 Presidential Elephant Suites set on elevated platforms amongst the indigenous flora of Hwange Game Park.
Deep in the mystical teak forests of Hwange is this unobtrusive camp, bathed in the tales of pioneering hunters and explorers such as Fredrick Courtney Selous. Lumbering giants drift around your stilted platforms , their tusks glinting in salute to the sanctuary of shade offered up by these massive trees.
This is Ivory Lodge – place of elephants. It is here that great herds of elephants are found – sometimes over 100 strong.
Hwange is renowned for its huge tuskers – big old bulls with magnificent tusks. It is also here that the famous Presidential Herd drinks – these elephants’ home-range is amongst the dense feeding areas of the SikumiVlei and where they find refuge from the scorching heat at Ivory’s water hole.
Silently, elegantly, the lodge stands over the waterhole…. watch by flood light under a star spangled African night sky – the elephants in their play-fighting….their display of instinctive rituals, their caressing and murmurings…all which speak of years gone by.

Once Zimbabwe’s capital, the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe is the biggest and most significant stone archaeological complex in sub-Saharan Africa. It is also one of its oldest – thought to date back to the 11th century and second only to South Africa’s Mapungwe. Composed entirely of rectangular granite blocks stacked on top of one another without the use of mortar, the walls and towers of the city measure up to 12 metres in places, and it is unsurprising that Great Zimbabwe was designated a World Heritage Site in 1986. Visitors can look forward to wandering through these ancient stone structures and immersing themselves in the history of this important heritage site.
Take a few steps back in time to the era of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe when you enter the luxury Lodge at the Ancient City. The Lodge evokes the splendour and mystery of the Great Zimbabwe Monument - the famous remains of the city that once housed a thriving African civilisation. The colonial government used to refer to it as the Zimbabwe Ruins.
Harare and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe are both a 3 hours' drive from the Lodge at the Ancient City.
Built on a granite outcrop, the Lodge at the Ancient City has sweeping views of a valley filled with trees, and faces in the direction of the Great Zimbabwe monument, so that you can see the Great Enclosure with its famous Conical Tower from the Hotel. Lake Mutirikwi, the third largest man-made dam in Zimbabwe, can also be seen. The main complex and guest lodges at the lodge are built from stone and thatch, with structures of granite stonewalling capturing the atmosphere of Zimbabwe's oldest UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The lodge can accommodate 48 guests in luxurious chalets decorated in such a way that you might feel as if you were an African emperor in a previous life. There are 4 family chalets, each accommodating 4 guests (extra beds can be arranged), as well as 14 chalets with twin or double beds. The chalets are all en-suite, equipped with bath, shower, toilet and basin. Square 13A 220V sockets are provided.
At night the firelight and soft mbira music at the Lodge at the Ancient City create a magical atmosphere. You can enjoy Table d'hôte meals in the open-air summer house, or, if the weather in Zimbabwe is not pleasant, in the thatched dining hall. Huge granite boulders, characteristic of the geology of many parts of Zimbabwe, form part of the lounge and bar at the Lodge of the Ancient City.
Activities revolve around the Great Zimbabwe Monument. Expert guides based at the Lodge offer a variety of explorative excursions to the famous Zimbabwe Ruins where they explain the origins and history and eventual decline of the city, the various trading routes as well as religious and social practices of the once thriving community. Game drives and walks in the nearby Lake Mutirikwi Recreational Park, sunset cruises on Lake Mutirikwi, as well as drives into the tribal areas surrounding the Great Zimbabwe site are also offered at the lodge.
In addition to a swimming pool, gift shop and laundry, the Lodge at the Ancient City offers well-equipped conference facilities for a maximum of 40 delegates. The Lodge at the Ancient City is an exceptional and unusual wedding venue and can accommodate up to 120 wedding guests. Airport transfers can also be arranged.

Composed entirely of rectangular granite blocks stacked on top of one another without the use of mortar, the walls and towers of the city measure up to 12 metres in places, and it is unsurprising that Great Zimbabwe was designated a World Heritage Site in 1986. Zimbabwe's eastern border with Mozambique is defined by the Eastern Highlands, comprised of three ranges of hills and mountains featuring the lush rolling hills and endless tea plantations of the Nyanga Range, the soaring granite peaks of the Chimanimani Mountains, and the fertile meadows and rich coffee plantations of the Bvumba Range. These breathtakingly scenic mountains serve as an ideal backdrop for the wide variety of outdoor pursuits on offer such as hiking, horse riding, golfing, and trout fishing. The northern reaches of this remarkable wilderness features predominantly rolling heath land which reminded European Settlers of Scotland leading them to create lakes, plant forests and fill the streams with trout. Once the private estate of Cecil John Rhodes, this northernmost area is now known as the Nyanga National Park. From the gorgeous pine forests and trout lakes of this extraordinary park to the yellowwood trees, protea shrubs and refreshing mountain pools of Chimanimani in the south, the Eastern Highlands is the perfect destination for travellers looking to unwind in the tranquillity of nature.
If you are looking for the ultimate getaway in the Eastern Highlands, with the promise of complete tranquillity and spectacular scenery, Musangano Lodge is the ideal location. Visitors soon fall under its spell because of its serene and peaceful atmosphere, charming accommodation, superb cuisine and stunning views, which invite to linger and unwind.
Spaced well apart for privacy, our tastefully furnished, very comfortable and spacious units are set on the lower slopes of a tree-covered hillside, blending well into the surrounding Miombo mountain woodland and offering magnificent views into valleys and towards mountains. Guests may choose between the larger, fully equipped self catering lodges for families and friends or smaller chalets for two with kitchenette and kettle.
Our PaMuchakata Restaurant has acquired an enviable reputation for serving delicious food, a blend of Central European and Southern African cooking - the best of the culinary arts of two worlds.
Musangano Lodge is ideally located for exploring the attractions of the Eastern Highlands like the Vumba Mountains, Nyanga National Park and Honde Valley. When you feel like stretching your legs, there are a variety of activities at hand on site and nearby to suit all ages and interests.
Our outreach community project ‘Nurturing Communities. Shaping Lives’ offers exciting insights into the lives of ordinary – and not so ordinary Zimbabweans with the rare opportunity of first hand experiences and lasting memories to take home.
Last but not least we are proud to announce that Cuckoo Nature Camp is finally open. The picturesque campsite is an ideal stopover en route to Mozambique, Masvingo, Gonarezhou, the Save Conservancy. Embedded in miombo woodlands and surrounded by lovely views towards hilly mountains, this rustic camp guarantees a true bush experience for all outdoor lovers. There are 4 sites available for individual campers as well as a larger site with space for more than 8 tents. Our solar powered thatched ablution blocks are spacious, light and airy. We furthermore offer a separate wash basin for dishes as well as braai facilities and a campfire setup for the cooler evenings.
Finally – referring to the meaning of Musangano Lodge and our vision of ‘the place where people meet’ – we would be very happy to welcome you at our little paradise.
1500hrs Vumba Botanical Reserve |
The Vumba Botanical Gardens and Reserve, located 32 kilometres from Mutare, are established on a portion of the farm formerly known as Manchester. The well-wooded park includes 159 hectares of landscaped gardens built around perennial streams which form a small lake. A network of footpaths that enable visitors to explore the interior of the Botanical Reserve has been opened. The reserve is well endowed with indigenous orchids and ferns and strategically positioned flower beds are encountered as one leisurely takes stock of the Gardens. Birdlife is also abundant here.
The self-catering lodges in the Gardens are very popular with visitors to the area. There is also a campsite with ablution blocks with hot and cold water systems and powered caravan sites. There is a swimming pool at the camping site. At the tearoom in the middle of the Gardens, visitors can enjoy refreshments; light meals, cakes, and vegetarian dishes can be provided on request.
